Tired of crappy data models and whiney data modelers? Need to deliver a high quality design in a short period of time? Need a better way to enforce standards? As part of trying to be more “agile” in my approach to developing databases, I have adopted concept from the agile world peer reviews. Before any data model moves from analysis (logical model) into development (physical model), the development team needs to gather to review what the modeler has done. If the model passes the review (almost never on the first round), the physical model is constructed. The physical model is then subjected to a rigorous review as well (including metadata). Only then can DDL be produced and deployed. This guide book will discuss the actual modeling and design process I follow and give you a check list of questions to ask in any model review session. This is a “take no prisoners” approach that has left many a would-be data modeler in a withering heap, but in the end you will have solid models and designs that deliver value.

If you like this book please tell your friends and leave me a review here on . Thanks!

I've been in IT for nearly 39 years and the 14-page paper didn't offer any more than what I have been doing over the years. It’s common-sense in writing. The one big drawback is that you have to either buy a kindle to get the paper or download kindle software to your computer then access the book. Once you do that, you can only read it. You have no privileges, which is strange because if you want to reference something in the book and give Kent the credit, you can type whatever you are referencing and then footnote it with Kent's credentials. Nice paper for a novice.

I like the no nonsense approach. It is a great outline to carry with you. So easy to refer to in a hurry. Well done Kent!
The title is accurate it's a checklist. I had expected more details on the ins and outs of what is a good data model. On the positive side it does give guidance on benefits and rationale for using the checklist. Personally, I did not get a satisfactory level of benefit for time spent.
Very useful, straight-forward checklist for data warehousing and business intelligence teams who want to be more agile in their approach to data modeling. A good checklist saves lots of time down the road, while still ensuring technical excellence!
This title certainly lives up to its claim to go through everything you need to ensure your data models are well designed. The big take home message from this work is that close collaboration across all levels of the project hierarchy is required in order to produce a data model that is both acceptable to everyone and is founded on excellence. You need to be able to take criticism as well as defend your work using sound technical knowledge.

All up, a nice piece of work.
This book is exactly what it's title says it is, a check list for doing data model design reviews. Kent walks you through the process that he's developed during his almost 30 year career.

While the book is a very quick read, it really delivers on it's premise.

Kent breaks out his process with sections on Standards and Processes, Logical Modeling, and Physical Modeling and wraps it up with some good cautions (born from experience I'm sure).

Note that this book assumes that you already know what data modeling is and how to do it. It uses terms that are very well known to data modelers but if you are new to data modeling then you are going to want to pick up an additional book on the actual data modeling process.

I'd recommend this book to folks who don't yet already have a systematic process for doing data model design reviews, or for folks who are considering hiring a data modeler to do some work for them and want to ensure that the modeler follows a systematic process instead of just winging it. Of course if you are hiring Kent to do data modeling for you (and you should if you can), then you probably don't need to buy this book. )

Data modeling can often be a mixture of art and science and by using Kent's book you can swing the pendulum a bit more towards the science side.

I debated between a 4 and 5 star review of this book and ultimately decided to go with a 5 star review for the following reason At the cost of the book it will pay for itself many times over by catching just one item that may have slipped through the cracks if you didn't have Kent's checklist.
