Mac Tyler lived a simple life in the sleepy, little town of Elder, Utah, At least that’s what his home teacher and long-time friend, Jake Hunt, thought the night he arrived to find Mac fallen in a heap at the bottom of his stairs, breathing his last breaths. When a secret letter written by Mac leads Jake to two dusty old suitcases full of 1930s paper money, Jake’s own predicable life takes a drastic turn. In an effort to discover the truth about the money, Jake delves deep into his deceased friend’s past, where he finds weavings of train-robbing uncles, Jewish friends trying to escape Germany, smuggled diamonds, and a close friendship with a runner for a New York City mob. All the while, he fells the presence of his friend, who, along with the angles, are watching him and silently taking not of his every action.
In addition to the long-held and preserved treasure, Jake finds three small notebooks written years before by Mac, his friend and mentor. Mac’s life is revealed in these books. The benefit of recording one’s life history is illustrated as Jake discovers a fascinating man, one that he thought he knew, but one that had lived and loved and lost.
Mac Tyler’s family was among the pioneer settlers of their home town, Elder, Utah. His forefathers had assisted in building the transcontinental railroad as it passed through the Utah territory. Due to undisclosed disputes, they had never been paid for their labors and thus developed resentment to the railroad and all it represented. Mac’s uncles acted out this hatred by robbing trains, and on a cold, clear night on January 2, 1911, robbed the Southern Pacific Overland Limited No. 1 as it left Ogden heading for California.
Jake also discovers that Mac had joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and had earned enough money to eventually serve a mission in pre-war Germany. While in the CCCs he developed a lasting friendship with Curtis Snider, a street wise, charismatic kid from New York City. Mac details his mission experiences which included a couple of glimpses of Hitler himself. At the end of his service he is enlisted in an effort to help his only converts escape the terror that awaits them, and immigrate to the United States.
Following his mission, with the German language as one of his skills, he returns to Europe as a member of the occupying forces of the United States. Here, by sheer coincidences, he meets his old pal, Curtis Snider who also is part of the war effort.
As all of these aspects of Mac’s life unfold, Jake must trace each branch of this web of mystery in his attempt to discover the source of the money. Did it come from the efforts of the train robbing uncles? Or, was its source the smuggled diamonds and other jewels of the German Jews? Perhaps it was in the canvas bag that Curtis Snider had left with him on a quick visit before the war as Snider traveled between California and New York. Or was it from some totally unrelated source?
Mac wanted Jake to have the money. He was clear about this. Mac had no children, but he did have a very aggressive nephew who dominates his three surviving estranged relatives Niece Number One, Nice Number Two, and Nephew Zero. Jake must contend with Nephew Zero’s desire to obtain the money for himself. This was a problem for Jake as Mac had left specific instructions “Don not let my nephew get any of this money!”
Sometimes stained, and sometimes in sync, Jakes relationship with his wife, Linda, is revealed as they must come together to solve this mystery. In a race against time, Jake struggles to keep the money from falling into the wrong hands as well as staring true to his friend’s dying wish. Can he figure out the truth; can he do what is right? Together with his wife, as Jake seeks divine guidance, his path of delivery is revealed.

The story kept me involved and curious right from the beginning as several stories were told at the same time. It was fascinating how they all came together in the end. I enjoyed learning about the early railroad, life in that time period and WWII. I highly recommend this book.
